How to Export Tax Summary from Shopify (2026 Guide)

Follow these steps to export your Shopify tax summary as a CSV file. Once exported, you can use any of our converter tools to transform the data for your target system.

Export Steps

1

Log in to your Shopify admin

Open your browser and go to your-store.myshopify.com/admin. Sign in with your credentials. You need at least the Reports permission to access the Analytics section. Tax reports are available on the Shopify plan and above; they are not available on the Basic Shopify plan.

Warning: Tax reports require the Shopify plan or higher. If you are on the Basic plan, you will not see the Taxes section under Analytics > Reports. You would need to upgrade or manually calculate tax from your orders export.
2

Navigate to Analytics then Reports

From the left-hand sidebar, click on Analytics, then click Reports. This opens the reports dashboard showing all available report categories including Sales, Finances, Customers, Acquisition, Behavior, and Taxes.

3

Open the Taxes report

Scroll down to the Taxes section in the reports list and click on the tax report you need. The primary options are 'United States sales tax' for US-based tax reporting and 'Taxes Finance Report' for a broader view of tax collected by country and region. Choose the report that matches your tax filing jurisdiction.

4

Set the date range for your reporting period

At the top of the report, use the date range selector to choose the period you need. You can select preset ranges like 'Last 30 days', 'Last quarter', or 'Last year', or set a custom date range by specifying exact start and end dates. Make sure the date range matches your tax filing period.

Tip: Always align the date range with your actual tax filing period (monthly, quarterly, or annually) to ensure the exported totals match what you need to report to your tax authority.
5

Review the report data

Before exporting, review the on-screen report to verify it shows the correct jurisdictions, tax rates, and amounts. The report breaks down tax collected by state or province, showing gross sales, taxable sales, non-taxable sales, and the tax amount collected for each jurisdiction.

6

Click Export and select CSV format

Click the Export button in the upper-right corner of the report. Choose CSV as the export format. The file will download to your browser containing all the data currently displayed in the report, including any applied filters and the selected date range.

Warning: A CSV file exported from tax reports has a maximum of one month of data per export. If your tax filing period spans multiple months, you will need to export each month separately and combine the files, or adjust the date range and export once for the full period if it falls within a single month.
7

Review and organize the exported data

Open the exported CSV in your spreadsheet application. Each row represents a tax jurisdiction with its associated sales and tax totals. Map the columns to your accounting needs: Taxable Sales is the sales base, Tax Collected is your liability, and if applicable, Marketplace Tax Withheld shows tax that Shopify already remitted on your behalf for marketplace orders.

Tip: When creating journal entries in your accounting software, subtract Marketplace Tax Withheld from Tax Collected to determine your net tax liability for each jurisdiction. This is the amount you actually owe to the tax authority.
